Trevor & Addie’s Surprise Engagement in Iceland

After spending the best two+ years of our lives exploring every corner of Europe I can no longer contain our secret… Trevor and I are getting married!

Our engagement story:

During our recent trip to Iceland Trevor and I drove the entirety of the ‘Ring Road’. If you aren’t familiar with Iceland, it’s a 1335 km road that goes around the country and passes by many of the most iconic and famous Icelandic attractions. On day four we started our day with a trip to Skogafoss Waterfall. The day wasn’t like most Icelandic days- there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and it was very warm for Icelandic standards with virtually no wind. We were constantly raving about the beautiful weather we were blessed with and excited for how fortunate we were to get to see Iceland like that!

The night prior we discovered a secret waterfall from an Icelandic travel blog that promised seclusion as well as extreme beauty. According to the site, it was very very close to Skogafoss and we were overtly excited to attempt to find it together. Neither of us like being around hoards of tourists and it sounded like the perfect escape! I couldn’t really find any other information about it so we were quite skeptical about it at first, but were still determined to find this magical place. We were already having such a wonderful time together in Iceland that this would just be icing on the cake if we found it.

After exploring for a bit we departed Skogafoss and made our way to the start of the hike, where we met the coolest dog ever. According to the collar his name was Askir (and I find it pretty funny that it was pronounced Ask ‘er, like ask her!). He showed us the way to the waterfall after rejecting our snack offering. The hike led through pastures and alongside a gorgeous rocky riverbed. Askir obviously knew we were taking pictures and that we were headed to this magical location. He allowed me to photograph him as he posed and he’d bark at us if we were moving too slowly. After a pretty easy hike we were almost there! You could hear the water falling before you could see it and Askir’s “Hurry Up!” barks were growing more frequent. As we made it a little closer, the top of the waterfall appeared and it was every bit as beautiful and secluded as it was promised to be.

Trevor and I stood in awe as the gorgeous waterfall and sat on a rock ledge eating our favorite trip snack, the infamous Toast Chee, which Askir graciously accepted once he had completed his quest and was crowned the ‘Good Boy’. The waterfall had to have been 100 ft high and sported a permanent rainbow at the bottom made by sunlight passing through the enchanting mist. It seemed to be something from a fairy tale. After a little bit of exploring and admiring, Trevor suggested that we try to climb behind the fall and see if there was a good view. Of course I wanted to! We had stumbled onto the best kept secret in all of Iceland. I wanted to soak it all up and experience everything with my best friend.

We climbed up the rocks and stood behind the astoundingly beautiful waterfall until Trevor kissed me and said excitedly, “I can’t wait any longer,” and he got down on one knee in the shadow of the cascade while my heart began pounding out of my chest “I want you to be my adventure partner for the rest of my life” and he pulled out the most gorgeous ring I have ever seen. He took my hand and placed it on my left ring finger. I was so surprised because I wasn’t expecting it at all in that moment, and it exceeded all of my wildest dreams. My best friend had asked me to spend the rest of our lives together in the most ‘us’ way possible! Our entire relationship has been one big adventure. We have loved each other more than anything and cherished every memory we have made, and we have made so many. What better way could he have asked me than in an incredible location we had to find together, in a foreign country where we could share our perfect moment with each other solely? I had known Trevor was ‘The One’ since our second date, which was an impromptu trip to a music festival in Belgium (Groezrock) where he stole my heart. All of that flashed through my mind as I was left speechless. I felt the biggest smile of my life creep across my face as I practically shouted “Yes!” I love this man with all my heart and soul and had been ready to make this choice for quite some time.

He stood up and we kissed for a long time. It felt as if the time had been standing still and we were the only two people in the world. The sun reflected off my ring and sent tiny rainbows all over the place, making it even more enchanting. We lounged around the beautiful waterfall for hours later and ate a celebratory picnic behind the waterfall as we rode the love-high we both were on. After leaving the falls, we headed to Vik for a tromp through the Black Sands Beach, Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara. I could not have imagined a better day if I had tried. I still cannot get over how amazing the proposal was and more importantly, how excited I am to spend the rest of my life enjoying this crazy adventure of a life with the man of my dreams. If you want to see video footage from the falls, I have compiled a video below so family and friends can share our day with us!
