North Carolina’s Most Romantic Getaways

Looking for somewhere to spend a lazy weekend with your significant other without spending a small fortune on airline tickets. Luckily, some of the prettiest places in the world are right in your back yard!

Beaufort is ranked “America’s Coolest Small Town” by Budget Travel’s readers, and for good reason. This colorful seaside town possesses the perfect balance between laid back beach community and rustic romance. Beaufort has plenty of things to do like visiting the Maritime Museum, deep sea fishing, or just strolling up and down the picturesque streets hand-in-hand with your sweetie. The romantic setting captured national attention when it was featured as the setting for the novel-turned-movie “A Walk to Remember” by Nicholas Sparks.

Where to eat:

Front Street Grill at Stillwater offers some stunning views and is also a “Rhum Bar”. Watching the sun set over the ocean with a beachy mixed drink and great company is as good as life can get.

Gorges State Park

Gorges State Park
is my personal favorite park in North Carolina. It’s located in Sapphire, right outside of Brevard. It is home to nearly 125 rare plant and animal species with 12 of those being endangered or threatened. The main hike is the Rainbow Falls path, and though it is technically considered part of Pisgah National Forest the boundaries are quite unclear. You and a loved one can hike past the immense raging waterfall, Rainbow Falls, up to Turtle Falls where you can slide down the (much smaller and safer) waterfall together! The mutual adrenaline will bring the two of you together.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway‘s definition should be “the scenic route” because it is 469 miles of breathtaking views. Who needs a date night when you can drive around in a cool car for a full day surrounded by rugged mountain landscapes? People from all over the continent flock to see the ‘changing of the leaves’ in October where the leaves are the most vibrant reds, yellows, and orange colors. Set the mood with a fun playlist, pack a picnic and don’t forget to stop to capture photos of your romance on the road. There are plenty of stops along the parkway, many displaying paths for romantic strolls offering 360 Degree panoramic views from the pristine mountaintops.

Pisgah Inn– starting at $138/night

What to eat:

I refuse to recommend a place to eat when it’s possible to have a romantic picnic on a mountain. Have a little romance in your life!

Wilmington is a fantastic larger college and beach town situated on the southeast coast of North Carolina. The historic downtown has a mile-long Riverwalk and was named the “Best American Riverfront” by USA Today. Take a tour of the Bellamy Mansion for a fun educational date. Take a leisurely stroll through Airlie Gardens and take in the sheer natural beauty of the blooming flowers and Spanish moss. March is one of the best times to visit if you want a quiet, intimate feel. This is when tulips and daffodils are in full swing and crowds haven’t accumulated yet. The Noni Bacca Winery is situated here and boasts a fabulous atmosphere to drink and be merry. Pick a bottle of wine and head to the beach to watch the sun set. It’ll be the best experience you’ll never remember with the one you’ll never forget.

Waterfalls Outside of Boone

Trash Can Falls/The Snake Pit doesn’t exactly sound like ‘romance’ but for adventurous people: what is better than a secluded Waterfall/swimming hole combination in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains? Located only 25 minutes from Boone, just outside Hanging Rock State Park, TCF and SP are excellent places to spend the day by a pure Mountain river. Trash can falls is the 15 foot water fall, alongside the perfect swimming hole. If you find yourself there on a beautiful sunny summer day, you are in for a treat. This isn’t listed in most Waterfall guidebooks and only those who have done extensive research on the area know about it.

Charleston, SC- Located in the bordering state South Carolina where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers come together to form the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and fantastic culture. The food is delectable.  Charleston is perfect if you’re looking for a change from North Carolina. Take a romantic canoe/kayak adventure for a coastal expedition and fall in love as you create lasting memories together. This will be something you can look back on and smile for your entire life knowing you had an amazing adventure together.
