Several months ago a Facebook video was virally circulating about a toilet themed restaurant in Taiwan. Knowing I would be moving close by and being the ridiculously mature person I am, I added it to the top of my bucket list. On our way to Bali, we had a 20 hour layover in Taipei (by choice) and finally had a chance to check it out. Boy, am I glad I did. Read below to find out all about Taipei’s notorious toilet restaurant.
The Verdict: Toilet Restaurant Edition
Modern Toilet is not somewhere you want to miss if you’re in Taipei. Really, if you’re anywhere close by in Taiwan, go. It’s the kind of place that you probably won’t visit more than once, but the atmosphere is awesome. The experience is worth it just to sit on toilets surrounded by poop emojis and the fitting decor. Visiting once is enough, but be sure to bring your sense of humor. You’ll have a shitty time if you don’t (pun intended!). The atmosphere definitely makes up for where the food is lacking.
(As described by someone who is not a food blogger)
Meh. Pretty much exactly what the TripAdvisor reviews say; come here for the fun atmosphere and to be able to say “I ate at a toilet restaurant!” We definitely were not blown away by the food. I don’t think it’s because we are spoiled by Okinawan cuisine, almost every other review felt the same way.

Modern Toilet Beef Hot Pot
Bland. There is not much to say about this main dish aside from the fact that it’s served in a giant toilet pot. The novelty of it makes it pretty interesting.
Urinal Green Tea
This was interesting because you got to keep the urinal after you were done. The green tea was so-so. I didn’t love it because it tasted exactly like honeysuckles I used to eat as a kid when I thought my parents were going to send me to my room (yes, I was a weird kid). It also tasted a lot like perfume. If you’re into overpoweringly fragrant drinks, this is the one for you.
Chocolate Poop Ice Cream
Every meal you order comes with a drink and ice cream! This is awesome because it’s served in its own urinal. The ice cream is more slushie-like than soft serve. It didn’t have a very strong chocolate flavor, but tasted more like shaved ice with a hint of chocolate. Regardless it was a great treat to beat the heat.
Poop Emoji Bread and Garlic Dipping Sauce
I ordered this because I belong on the show True Life: I’m Addicted to Carbs. It was poop emoji shaped so it made for some awesome pictures. The bread itself was pretty bland and not very fluffy, but I’m assuming it was because it had to be made a certain way to look like a poop. The garlic dipping sauce was very, very strong.
The fries tasted like almost everywhere else’s baked fries. The only difference was that it was served with ketchup AND sweet chili sauce. I love sweet chili sauce.
So there you have it. I thoroughly enjoyed the novelty associated with visiting Taipei’s toilet restaurant and strongly encourage everyone else to go!
